Streaming, digital meetings and news updates are just a few examples of the many mobile activities that keep Danes’ phones active. In recent years, the need for high-speed mobile networks among Danish consumers and businesses has steadily increased, with data usage rising by 30 percent in 2021 alone.
To address this growing demand, TDC NET announced in December 2020 that we would phase out our 3G network by the end of 2022 to make room for faster mobile technologies. Preparations are already underway, and by early 2023, we will switch off our 3G network.
“For TDC NET, it is essential that we offer the best possible mobile network in Denmark. A robust mobile infrastructure is necessary to handle the rising data consumption. That’s why we continuously invest in and optimize our mobile network to meet this demand. As part of this, we are phasing out 3G to increase network speed and capacity through the faster 4G and 5G technologies. In recent years, we have rolled out 5G nationwide and now, we have the best 5G coverage in Denmark,” says Robert Dogonowski, Commercial Director at TDC NET.
Currently, 3G data accounts for less than 1 percent of TDC NET’s total data traffic, with voice calls over the 3G network also decreasing significantly in recent years. Many countries have already phased out 3G technology, and several telecom operators in Denmark have similar plans. For those with older mobile phones, TDC NET’s nationwide 2G network will still be available for voice calls and basic data services.
